What will help prevent breaking out after shaving?

My 16-yr old son thinks shaving is causing him to break out along his jawline. What can we do to prevent this?

It sounds like a case of Razor Bumps rather than acne. This is usually from shaving too close to the skin which causes infected ingrown hairs – the bumps.

Try to get the hairs out from under the skin with a pair of tweezers, and when he shaves, make sure that he shaves with the grain. Shaving against the grain is not a good idea.

    use proactiv

Witch hazel is an excellent astringent — it cleans and closes pores. Main drawback is that it has a slightly sour smell and contains about 36% alcohol and might be very drying to the face, especially in cold weather.

Another contender is Sea Breeze — plain Sea Breeze, not the myriad variations the company has been putting on store shelves. It is an astringent with a Noxema-like smell (cloves and camphor, probably).
