Can I use soap instead of shaving cream when I shave my facial beard?

My dad said that using soap when shaving is the same as using shaving cream. It's my first time to shave my facial hair(beard and chin) and I haven't started shaving because of this soap/shaving cream issue. I need some help. Thanks.

sure, but depending on your skin it can be more drying then shaving which can lead to more irritation for the skin for shaving.
My dad uses warm soapy lather all the time and he likes it better then cream.

the main point for the soap or the cream is to 1. soften the hair and make them easier to shave, 2. reduce the surface friction between the blade and your skin, thus reducing irritation from shaving.

Soap and shaving cream in this respect can be used interchangably.

YES IT IS FINE TO USE SOAP IN SOME CASES WHEN I HAVE TRAVELED TO OTHER SMALLER COUNTRIES I HAVE ALSO USED HAND CREAM BECAUSE MY WIFE LIVES IN PERU AND THE BATHROOM FACILITIES ARE NOT LIKE THEY ARE IN AMERICA IN SOME PLACES OF PERU

you can use it but shaving cream offers a little bit more protection for your skin especially if it’s your first time. I shave my whole head and believe me soap wouldn’t cut it. I use a cream for sensitive skin because its a bit thicker and I don’t get cut that way.Make sure your razor is new too cause a dull razor hurts like hell lol

definitely. I haven’t used shaving cream for twenty years. use a good clean soap like Ivory and rinse well when you’re done.

It’s dead easy, as they are both essentially acting as lubricants.
All you need to do is get a shaving brush wet, preferably with hot water, (if you don’t have a brush just use your hands) and get a nice lather with some bar soap. Stick that on and shave like the little girl you are.
    Beards are awesome.
